At the beginning of the 20th century, women's presence in the labor market was restricted to a few areas, especially jobs in the textile industry.

With lower salaries than men, long working hours and no labor protection, women's reality was marked by inequality - not to mention the hours of domestic work in their own homes.

Over the years, there have been advances in the inclusion of women in the Brazilian labor market. According to Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE)in recent decades, female participation in the workforce has grown significantly: in 1970, only 18% of women worked. In the 2000s, this figure rose to 40% and currently stands at around 54%. But despite this growth, wage inequality persists and bothers.

According to the Ministry of Labor and Employment's Salary Transparency report, published in September 2024, Brazilian women earn 20.7% less than men.

What about the financial market?

Looking at the financial market from the point of view of the profile of its investors, this disparity is also visible. According to B3 data, in 2024, Brazil had more than 6 million individual investors on the stock exchange, but only 25,73% were women. This represents just 1.5 million female CPFs. For comparison, this percentage was only 23.77% in 2015, showing a still timid advance.

It's commendable that more than 1 million women have started investing in the last five years, but female participation remains stagnant, with men accounting for 75% of investors.

Other data from B3 points out that, in the same period, female investors showed less diversification of assets compared to men.

At the same time, female representation in top management also reflects these barriers and disparities. The fourth edition of the Women in Shares study, carried out by B3, shows that more than half of the companies listed on the stock exchange (56%) have no women on the board of directors, while 37% have no women on the board of directors.

Do equality policies for women change the scenario?

The data shows that, even with policies to encourage diversity, there is still structural resistance to the presence of women in decision-making positions.

In addition to the difficulties faced in entering the financial market, cultural barriers and the persistent wage gap contribute to maintaining this unequal scenario.

A history of lower income means that women have fewer resources available to invest, while a lack of representation in corporate and financial environments reduces their confidence in making financial decisions.

Gender equality in the capital markets and the corporate environment is an issue that needs to be resolved. In order for female participation to grow significantly, it is necessary to combat structural inequalities and create mechanisms that encourage the presence of women both as investors and in leadership positions.

Meanwhile, International Women's Day will continue to be a day of struggle against the difficulties faced, rather than a celebration of the achievements made.

*Márcia Campos is an economist and an independent member of the board of directors of Fictor Alimentos S.A.

Source: SpaceMoney

Por Márcia Campos O Dia Internacional das Mulheres, celebrado em 8 de março, tem raízes históricas ligadas à luta das mulheres por melhores condições de trabalho, igualdade salarial e direitos políticos.
